Mission Yeti: Cassimoi 2012

posted Sep 18, 2012, 6:20 AM by Christian Thio   [ updated Sep 19, 2012, 2:41 AM ]

Status: Completed!
Date: 15.09.2012.

Biagio, Ale and Miro picked me up on the road at Ponte Lesgiüna, between Biasca and Malvaglia, where I left my car. It took us about one hour to drive to Larécc 1635m, at the Diga del Luzzone (follow Alpe Garzott), where we parked Biagio's car. At 19:15 we were ready to start our hike to the Rifugio Scaradra at 2173m. In the small hut we had a sweet surprise: three girls were already accommodating at the kitchen table, so happy just a second before to be there all alone... A funny situation but we had a great time together. Thanks Nadia, Prisca and Jantine.
The day after we followed the path up to Passo Soreda 2759m until point at altitude 2680m, then turned south to Vadrecc di Sorda. Miro went to Sella del Cassinello 3019m and joined the summit 3128m of Cassimoi from ENE. Ale, Biagio and Thio took the south slope of the summit.
After a long pause to take photos, we continued to point 3079m and reaches the SE summit of Cassimoi at 3129m with its spectacular vertical south wall. Cassimoi's top is big and flat, and with some wind coming from WNW, the perfect place to play with the wings practicing some ground handling and kite slides! We had great fun but 2 hours after we were KO! At 15:45 we finally took-off and had wonderful flights mainly in Val di Carassino with good thermals up to 3200m!

Route Day 1: Larécc 1635m - Alpe Scaradra 1797m - Rifugio Scaradra 2173m
Heights: 540m up (1h30', medium).
Route Day 2: Rifugio Scaradra 2173m - Alt. 2680m (dir. Passo Soreda) - Vadrecc di Sorda - Cassimoi 3128m - Bocchetta 3079m - Cassimoi 3129m.
Heights: 700m up (3h00', medium-hard).

Mission Yeti: Punta di Stou 2011

posted Jan 2, 2012, 9:57 AM by Christian Thio

Status: Completed!
Date: 28.12.2011.

It was the 26.12.2011 when I realized that the next two days will be good for a new Mission Yeti! I had to find a destination where the start is quite high because of the little snow in the mountains! Normally you do such kind of missions rather in march. But it's just fine with the snow, and we could take advantage to climb higher!
So we got the chair-lift at the Nara Resort and started our mission at 1937m! Eight mountaingliders and two friends flying down with our tandems. The snow was just perfect with no risk at all, considering the last snowfall in 16.12.2011. We got the perfect day!

Route: Nara (Cambra) 1937m - Pian Laghetto 1912m, Arbión 2300m - Punta di Stou 2566m.
Heights: 700m up (3h00', medium).

Meeting: 28.12.2010, 08:00 Rest. Meridiano (Arbedo-Castione) - 09:00 Ski Resort Nara (Valle di Blenio).

Mission Yeti: Cramosino 2011

posted Nov 24, 2011, 12:01 AM by Christian Thio   [ updated Nov 30, 2011, 10:33 AM ]

Status: Completed!
Date: 26-27.11.2011.

Be prepared for this very interesting mission in Valle Verzasca. Day 1, wild slopes and spectacular views from Alpe della Costa and a charm of a hut just renewed in summer 2010 are waiting to be discovered. Day 2 we hike to the top of Pizzo Cramosino 2718m. The snow will hopefully assure a good walking layer... Snowshoes are of course a must and don't forget to bring your security/rescue equipment either! From the top we dispose of wide and not too steep slopes with S-SW exposures for great paragliding take-off. Landings can be found in Sonogno, Frasco or Gerra (see the map below).
If you are looking for light equipment, like harness and/or emergency parachute, Renato at www.paramania.ch will be glad to rent some. Remember: every little Kg counts!

Route Day 1: Frasco 885m - Sèrt 1301m - Pescia 1419m - Sciüres 1440m - A coo der Preda 1561m - Rifugio Alpe Costa 1941m (6-8 places).
Heights Day 1: 1060m up (3h30', medium).
Route Day 2: Rifugio Alpe Costa 1941m - Laghetto 2050m - Pizzo Cramosino 2718m.

This beatiful hike & fly was organized by Renato from the flying school Paramania! Thanks a lot for everything!!!
As much as 31 pilots came at the meeting in Ascona and filled up two busses that took us to Purèra at about 1100m! The walk from there to the take-off in Urione 1596m, above the Alpe di Naccio, takes about one hour. Just follow the street and yellow path signs, you can't go wrong!
A fantastic automn day with some little thermals, that's pretty nice for November. Take a look at the photos and enjoy the short video!

Mission Yeti: Trosa - Salmone 2010

posted Dec 28, 2010, 11:13 AM by Christian Thio   [ updated Nov 22, 2011, 6:54 AM ]

Status: Completed!
Date: 29.12.2010.

Join us for this nice hike'n'fly-combo!
And the question is: will everybody be able to land in Capoli?! You need a glide ratio of 6:1 and with some nord wind, it's a quite hard task to fly! So let's consider plan B (La Streccia 630m) or even plan C (Ronchini 300m)...
Only Mani completed this task to 100%. Biagio landed in a very small open spot between trees, not far from the target. Thio went to Prada 900m and joined the team after a short hike. Andy didn't believe in his Yeti glider and decided for plan D: landing in Tegna Pozzo 220m and... GAME OVER!

Route: Cimetta 1670m - Cima della Trosa 1869m - fly to Capoli 1001m - Monte Salmone 1560m - fly to Tegna 220m (Pozzo, the beach).
Heights: 780m up (1h+1h45', easy-medium).
Meeting: 29.12.2010, 07:45 S. Antonino, 08:00 Quartino, 08:30 Orselina (cable-car departure).

Mission Yeti: Monte Boglia 2010

posted Nov 2, 2010, 1:33 AM by Christian Thio   [ updated Nov 22, 2010, 11:56 PM ]

Status: Completed!
Date: 06.11.2010.

This was for sure the Mission Yeti with the most participants ever.
We began with a short briefing at the soccer stadium of Lugano Cornaredo. Many thanks to Monze who organized the M.Y. very accurately. Especially the landing into the stadium with the authorization of the control tower of Lugano-Agno airport. Weather wasn't too bad, but started with the summit of Monte Boglia in the clouds... Hopefully only for about 100m. So we had to take-off in a deep white soup!!! A very interesting affair... Below the mist, we found good conditions and were able to climb in the thermics to assure long flights over Lugano.

Route: Monte Brè 925m - Brè 800m - Materone 920m - Sasso Rosso 1295m - Monte Boglia 1516m.
Heights: 700m up (1h 40', easy-medium).
Meeting: 06.10.2010, 08:15 - Cornaredo Soccer Stadium, Lugano; at the nord side parking area (Cinestar Cinema).
Mountaingliders: Monze, Isa, Pietro, Beppe, Biagio, Luli, Elvis, Sue, Simi, Robi, Thio, Martina, Miki, Sila, Alf, Mani, Ezio, Tita, Bosca, Marco, Andrea, ...

Mission Yeti: Pizzo Corgella 2010

posted Oct 29, 2010, 9:55 AM by Christian Thio   [ updated Nov 1, 2010, 2:09 AM ]

Status: Completed!
Date: 30.10.2010.

Don't think about the wind, just join us for a wonderful hike and let's hope in smooth flights!
We knew from the forecast that wind in the mountains will be strong. At the Gotthard pass the weather station measured over a 100 km/h! And yes, it was strong. At Cucchetto about 20 km/h and on top of Pizzo Corgella 30 km/h and more. Too strong for paragliders, but still easy for speed flyers! Only Andy and Pistons did it from "top to bottom", the others started at Cucchetto 1571m.

Route: Camorino 250m - Croveggia 938m (cabins) - Cremorasco 1100m - Cucchetto 1571m - Pizzo Corgella 1707m.
Heights: 800m up (2h 30', medium).
Meeting: 30.10.2010, 09:00 in Sant'Antonino (Wendy's house).
Mountaingliders: ThiO, Andy, Pistons, Monze, Carola, Biagio, Peppo, Luli.
